back in action…

So I’m back from London and I’ve been thrown straight into the fire. TAing is starting soon; I have a dissertation prospectus to rewrite quickly, reading to do, research trips to two countries to plan, and a room full of suitcases from storage to unpack and clear up. So things are busy.

I still don’t feel like I am supposed to be back. I was in London just long enough to feel like I actually lived there so coming back was odd. But I think the drive home this weekend will bring me back to reality immediately.

Since I start TAing next week, I’d love to know what suggestions people may have for leading good discussion sections?

  1. First, thanks for coming back to your blog. I wondered if you’d gone AWOL.

One thing I’ve learned from my TAing and teaching over the years – you’ll have better success getting conversations started if you make sure they know that you’ll entertain non-specialist questions. As in, asking them to come in with questions a non-student might have on the topic/text. And then, YOU don’t answer it – you have them work out the answer.

    What are you TAing?

Thanks for the suggestion Belle. I’m TAing the survey of 18th c. British history. It’s not completely foreign to me but it’s not my specialty.
