women, tenure, and after

I just wanted to link to Dr. Crazy’s post about women in academia. I can’t really do the post justice here so I recommend that everybody read it if they haven’t already. She’s particularly insightful when it comes to how women negotiate the path between associate professor and full professor, a passage even more difficult for those women who wait until they get tenure to start a family. Many women (myself included) see post-tenure time as a freer or more ideal time to have children than during graduate school or the first years of tenure-tracking; she points out the added pressures of this particular phase. Plus she has a lot of good things to say about avoiding the mindset that sees teaching as contributing nothing to research. Check it out.
